The permit to work system for kids is fairly similar in all the states with small variations. With the exception of one state, the work permit cost is zero. It only costs your time plus the time of your guardian, your school, and your employer to complete the work permit documents for a teenager.

The required permits always include 14 and 15 year olds to be hired but in some cases, also include 16 and 17 year olds. Once you turn 18, the state and federal laws consider you an adults and the permit to work system does not apply to you.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, young teenagers can only work outside of school hours.  They can work in non-hazardous, non-manufacturing, and non-mining jobs under certain conditions. 

14 and 15-year-olds are legally permitted to work the
following hours:

  • 3 hours on school days
  • 18 hours during school weeks
  • 8 hours on non-school days (like holidays,
    weekends, and summer jobs)
  • 40 hours on non-school weeks

Some states require teens to obtain an under 16 work permit

Once you turn 16 years old, most of the limitations and
restrictions are lifted.  You can work as
