Anyone can sign and cash a black money order if found or is lost.  You should insist on naming, addressing, and signing any money order, you buy with the recipient’s information.

How to spot a fake money order?

You can call the issuing company to verify the money order.  Here are signs on how to tell if the money order is fake:

  • The dollar amount area looks altered
  • Amount is too high; most everyone has either a $500 or $1,000 limit
  • No watermark.  MoneyGram, Western Union, and USPS prevent fake money orders by including a watermark

If you are still suspicious, it’s a fake money order and receipt, then insist on getting paid in cash.

Can you use a credit card for a money order?

Only a couple of places let you buy a money order with a credit card.  7-Eleven and Xoom allow you to purchase a money order with a credit card.  

Difference between cashier’s check and money order?

A cashier’s check can be for larger amounts and is issued only by a bank and requires you have a bank account to guarantee the funds.  A money order is via a third-party, inexpensive, more convenient locations, and can be usually purchased for up to $1,000 each.
